Making headway while the sun shines: Summer Update
Prolonged periods of hot weather are not the friend of the gardener or nursery team. But despite the heatwaves, we are managing the tree lines admirably, irrigating almost continuously and keeping on top of treecare and production.
Whilst we are receiving orders, we have to manage demand sensibly in these conditions as it is an incredibly difficult set of circumstances in which to plant. Ground conditions are really not conducive to good planting establishment and as such, we are delaying deliveries to ensure customers and stock has the best chance of thriving in gardens and landscapes.
Earlier this month, we supplied the landscape team at Toparia Summits, based near us in East Retford. The shrubs, plants and trees supplied were delivered ready for the creation of peripheral planting at a local Morrisons petrol station. The company are involved in commercial landscaping across the region, and also create soft landscapes at care homes and business parks.
We have also been supplying plants directly to a number of care homes across the region as they improve their gardens, outdoor space and peripheral planting on their approaches and surrounding parking spaces.

On the Nursery this month
This Summer we have started to use a new mechanical weeder. An attachment to our compact tractor, this makes lighter work of managing weeds, disturbing the soils so that the weeds die off quickly. Less chemical usage means that the soil and the environment can thrive in a more healthy, organic manner. Early results are good, and we will continue to look for other time and resource-saving equipment to help the Tree Production Team across the nursery.
Alongside weed management, the team have been focused on caning all of our newly-planted trees. There are a number of maintenance tasks on the programme too, with the Tree team currently “legging up”, pruning and preparing the nursery production for the September stocktake and marking up. “Legging up” is a nursery term for the pruning practice of removing lower branches from a main trunk or stem to raise up the main tree canopy.
Early Autumn Plans
Returning to Four Oaks and Southwell events in September, the sales team will be preparing and selecting stock to showcase and will be planning their displays and marketing in the lead up to each.
Four Oaks Trade Show takes place on 1-2 September 2026 – trade and retail visitors will find us in our usual outside pitch at OP25.
Southwell Ploughing Match and Show is on 26 September 2026 at Farnsfield, Nottingham NG22 8HW. The Green Mile Trees team will be part of the Trade Stands.
