PLANTING

Field grown trees:
  • Soak the root ball thoroughly before planting.
  • Dig a planting pit wider than the root ball, by about a handbreadth all round. Fork over the bottom of the planting pit.
  • Place the root ball carefully in the pit. DO NOT REMOVE WIRE OR HESSIAN.
  • Backfill the hole, firming carefully, ensuring no air pockets. The tree should be planted at the same depth as when in the nursery.
  • Support the tree firmly, using one or two stakes driven well in, avoiding damage to the roots. (The stakes may need to be at an angle.) Secure with a straining bar or tree ties to prevent damage.

Our extensive range of container-grown plants are available for year-round planting.

Container grown trees:
  • Soak the container thoroughly before planting.
  • Dig a planting pit wider than the container, by about a handbreadth all round. Fork over the bottom of the planting pit.
  • Remove the container from the tree root, and place the root carefully in the pit.
  • Backfill the hole, firming as you do so, ensuring no air pockets. The surface of the compost should be level with the ground.
  • Support the tree firmly, using one or two stakes driven well in, avoiding damage to the roots. (The stakes may need to be at an angle.) Secure with a straining bar or tree ties to prevent damage.
AFTERCARE

Attention to watering is ESSENTIAL for the first two growing seasons. Nearly all failures are due to too much or too little water. Apply water REGULARLY and ensure that the soil is well soaked, allowing the soil to dry out between watering.

Staking should be redundant after two growing seasons. Check ties regularly and prevent chafing or constriction.

A LIGHT application of a general fertiliser may be beneficial early in the year.

Guard against rabbit damage if this is a risk.
