NewsletterOctober 2011It has been the driest autumn in memory here at Green Mile. We are used to long spells without rain, but this has been something else. Reports have been coming in of downpours in other parts of the country. Even quite locally the drought broke on September. But here, nothing. The first rain we had for months was more than a week into October. And so we need a good lot more to make up the shortfall. Despite this, most of the trees have grown surprisingly well, and its a testament to the skills of Chris and the team that things have gone as well as they have. What water we could get (our supplies are rationed) has been carefully managed, with strict priorities. All the other jobs, such as staking, tying and pruning have been carried out with our usual diligence. And so, there are some really good trees, as usual, to dig out, once the leaves have come off and the trees are dormant. Birches, maples, cherries, mountain ash, crab apple, ash, are all available in lots of varieties. There are trees with bags of winter interest, autumn colour, flowers, catkins, berries, evergreens, the lot. This summer saw the departure of our nursery manager, Dick Riley. He started with us in the eighties, and is now going for some well earned rest and a bit of golf practice. Paul Haste, who has been with us for a good while, and has a wealth of experience and knowledge, has taken over the nursery manager's job. Callers at will often meet Paul, deputising for Chris Scott. As we gear up for our busiest part of the year, we should still have time to welcome customers who wish to visit us. Please give us some notice (by email or on the phone) and we look forward to seeing you. Phone the office on 01777 702422 or fax 01777 860922, or email christopherscott@greenmiletrees.co.uk. |
