About Green Mile TreesWe have over 70,000 semi-mature trees, conifers, instant hedging plants and topiary. Growing trees up to 30cm girth, we have trees in containers as well as in the ground. We can offer a big range of native trees as well as a large range of ornamental trees. We can also provide other plants including native hedging. We sell retail as well as to the trade, and will deliver and plant for you. Green Mile Trees was started in the early 1970's by Anthony Scott, Chris's father. In those days Green Mile Farm was a mixed farming enterprise, with livestock and a range of arable crops. A very forward thinking farmer, Mr Scott decided to diversify before most farmers had even thought of it. Through conversations with friends in the nursery world (he was a great gardener and plantaholic), he decided to try his hand at growing bigger trees for local authorities and landscapers. Initially many of the trees were sold for planting in the new towns of the north of England, and Scotland (visitors to Glenrothes and Cumbernauld will see many Green Mile trees). The range of trees grown was quite limited, by today's standards, but gradually increased to the comprehensive list we grow today. From the beginning there was a very good level of technical expertise available to the nursery, and this has continued to the present; in fact we often help out with planting advice and problem-solving for our wide customer base. Chris had a considerable period of hands on training away from the nursery, and then rejoined the business in the early eighties. Since then the business has progressed, weathering economic storms and market difficulties. Over the years we have found that there is a firm demand for our products from all sorts of customers. In the eighties the big majority of our trees went to local authorities, all over the country. Now we still see some of them, but we also sell to lots of landscape contractors, small landscaping businesses, and domestic customers. We are a small team of about a dozen, including part-timers (and a few old-timers). There is a generally low rate of staff turnover, with quite a few stalwarts having more than 20 years with the firm. This stability of staffing gives us a really solid base of skills and experience. |
